Madin Lopez founded ProjectQ in 2012 because they wanted to focus on creating a generation of homeless queer youth that love themselves. The first ever event for ProjectQ was held at the QPOC conference at CSUN in 2012. In 2013, they began volunteering at the LA LGBT youth shelter on Highland, giving haircuts to about 30 homeless youth a month. They have since purchased a vintage Airstream, converted it into a mobile self-esteem building hair salon, (named the “Hairstream”) and they have driven it across the United States providing haircuts to homeless LGBTQIA+ youth at various organizations. In 2018 they opened the ProjectQ Salon & Community Center is the Chinatown area of Los Angeles, California. Where they now provide free gender affirming haircuts and mentorship workshops to over 700 LGBTQIA+ youth annually.
The LAGLCC Inclusion Task Force is dedicated to increasing the visibility of diversity within our LGBTQ* business community through education, networking and direct engagement.
